Disc Degeneration

Spinal Disc Degeneration

Degenerative disc disease is generally a combination of problems in the spine that begins with damage to the disc, but can affect all parts of the spine. Problems considered to arise from a degenerating disc may include discogenic pain, and bulging discs. Discogenic pain can be the result of a disc that begins to degenerate and can cause lower back, buttock or leg pain when making certain movements. Bulging discs and bone spurs can also occur as a result of degenerative disc disease. A bulging disc may cause narrowing of the spinal canal which may result in significant pain and discomfort. Spinal stenosis may result and a complete evaluation by a spine surgeon may be needed.

Spine Treatment Options

Conservative treatment is generally the initial plan of care, but will depend on the seriousness of your condition. Following a minor back injury, you will want to relieve the pain and pressure with rest. Physical therapy may be helpful in reducing your pain and inflammation while improving your strength and mobility. Other conservative treatments may include non-surgical injections such as epidural steroid injections. These injections may relieve your pain and also decrease inflammation. If, however, conservative measures do not alleviate your pain, surgical options may be a consideration for you.
