Bursa Injection

Bursa Injection is a pain treatment for a condition called bursitis which is the irritation or inflammation of a bursa. The bursa is a lubricating, fluid filled sac that allows smooth motion between two internal body surfaces such as bone, muscle, ligaments or tendons. When the bursa sac becomes inflamed, it may result in pain. Areas of the body that bursitis may affect include the elbow, shoulder, hip and knee.

Bursa Injections for Pain Relief

The medication that will be injected includes a steroid (long-acting cortisone type medication) and a local anesthetic. The actions of these medications are to reduce pain, inflammation and swelling. The local anesthetic may provide temporary, immediate relief. The steroid may take anywhere from a few days to a week to start working but is intended to provide extended relief. Physical therapy and/or other conservative treatments may also be recommended. This procedure takes only a few minutes and can safely be performed in the clinic exam room.
